The
centre of Homoeopathic education in
The centre of Homoeopathic education in Wales. Swansea homoeopath, Bill Rumble, established the Welsh School of Homoeopathy in September 1995, and was joined shortly afterwards by Linda Gwillim, a homoeopath based in Machynlleth in Mid Wales. It is organised as a limited company where all profits are fully reinvested in the school. The School started off in rented rooms in Swansea, then moved to a converted barn at Felingwm Isaf before moving in 2002 to its current, permanent base, in Bridge Street, (just off Nott Square) in Carmarthen. Here, next to the ancient Castle, feels a very fitting site for the School - Carmarthen, with its historical links to Merlin, apothecary, magic and healing! The School offers a 4-year part time training course (10 weekends a year) covering homoeopathic philosophy, materia medica and clinical training. But, more importantly, students are taken on a personal journey to lead out the healer from within. This is very appropriate as homoeopathy is all about the individualisation of the patient and so this must also apply to the training of the individual homoeopaths. The School is recognised by the Society of Homoeopaths and is a member of the Homoeopathic Course Providers Forum. Homoeopathy is based on the teachings of Samuel Hahnemann, a German physician working in the late 1700’s, who believed in treating the ‘whole person’ rather than any particular physical ailment. Hence, in a homoepathic consultation, the homoeopath needs time to listen to the patient about how they are feeling in themselves, their family and past medical history as well as their present physical complaints. It is a system of medicine, which works on the basis of ‘like cures like’ – symptoms produced by a substance in a healthy person, can show the need for that substance when similar symptoms appear in ill health. e.g. we know that the eyes can water when peeling an onion, so the remedy Alium Cepia, made from the onion, can be used to treat the symptom of watery eyes in hay fever. The homoeopathic remedies are made from all sorts of substances, animal, vegetable and mineral, but first they are diluted and shaken to remove any toxicity from the original substance and to increase the energetic potency of the remedy. The School has already produced a large number of fully licensed graduates, most of which are now practising in and around Wales. One of our graduates has set up ‘Project Sol’ – a charity that offers free homoeopathic treatment to sections of the community in the Swansea area who would otherwise not be able to afford it. Many of our graduates work for this project on a voluntary basis. Graduates from the school have also set up the annual Welsh Homoeopathic Conference in Llandrindod Wells, where homoeopaths come from all over the country to hear leading international homoeopaths, as well as more local ones, talk about the art and science of the second most widely used therapeutic system in the world. The School also runs several ‘Continuing Professional Development’ seminars throughout the year, where leading homoeopaths are invited to share their experiences, expertise and knowledge on a wide variety of topics with homoeopaths from Wales and the surrounding area. Since
the School has been in Carmarthen it has raised the profile of
homoeopathy in and around the town. Contributing to this success has
been the popular teaching clinics held every other Friday, which offers
patients the opportunity to access homoeopathy at the low cost of only
£10 a consultation. These clinics have been well attended by patients
from all over Wales, who have been attracted to Carmarthen mainly by
word of mouth recommendations. And the Saturday “drop in” clinics
are available for minor ailments needing a short consultation only
without an appointment. A fully qualified professional homeopath is
available on these days for treatment or to give free advice. The School is focused on building a homoeopathic community in and around Wales, with the aims of raising the profile and availability of homoeopathy for patients, providing a support network for homoeopaths in Wales as well as being a centre of homoeopathic education.
