Career  Development Loans

Career Development Loans (CDL) are available and are given usually for a period of 2 or 3 years, during which time the government pays the interest. The balance should be re-paid within 5 years of completion of the Course. Students may also be eligible for a grant.

A CDL can be used to fund any full-time, part-time or distance learning course as long as it is vocational (vocational means it gives you the skills needed for an occupation, trade or profession) and lasts no longer than two years - plus up to one year’s practical experience if this is part of the course. For courses  longer than two years you can use a CDL to fund part of it. If the loan is arranged so that it covers the final two years of a longer course, then this will ensure that repayments do not start until after you have finished your course.

Further information and forms can be obtained from the Career Development Loan, Co-operative Bank - Tel. 0845 7212 212, Royal Bank of Scotland - Tel. 0800 121 127, or any branch of the Barclays Bank.
